Family

I am a mother with two children. I was trapped in an abusive relationship for several years, mostly because I was too afraid of what would happen if I tried to leave. AWARE has helped me to break free from my fears. They provided transitional housing for us while I was in the process of trying to relocate to a different part of the county. They have provided me with the help of a legal advocate, someone to help me navigate the legal system (which would be overwhelming and frightening without support). And I have started attending a support group on a regular basis. Because of AWARE’s help, I feel like I have hope for the future.

Education

I have been so thankful for the services that the Grove City Library has available for my son. I am a single mom and have chosen not to have the internet at home because I do not want my son to have unsupervised access to it while I am at work. He has been able to go to the library after school to do his homework and have supervised access to the internet. It has been such a blessing for us!

I am 64 and have never learned to read. It hasn’t always been easy, but I have found a way to get by without it and without people knowing for most of my life. Two years ago I became a grandfather. Knowing that I would never be able to read a book to my grandson is what made me make the decision to come to the Literacy Council. So far, my experience has been great. I was embarrassed to come through the door the first day, but I’m not embarrassed any more. I look forward to my weekly tutoring sessions and the time it will allow me to spend with my grandson.

I am a twenty five year old mother of three. I dropped out of school in 9th grade because I was pregnant with my first child. I started going to the Literacy Council in October unsure of my potential. With the support and tutoring that I received, I passed my GED and became the first person in my family to finish school. And in December, I became the first person in my family to enroll in college.

Community

I call the volunteers at Meals on Wheels “Angel Volunteers”. Seeing one of those “angel volunteers” at my door is the highlight of everyday. It has made me feel like someone really cares about me. I don’t get around as well as I use to. Being able to depend on having those meals delivered has given me more of a sense of peace. I don’t know what I would do without them.
